Update ***US Department of Homeland Security extends enforcement deadline of Federal REAL ID Act from Oct. 2020 to Oct. 2021***
For whatever reason, the State Of NJ decided to introduce the ability to change your gender on your Driver’s License. No matter how you feel you identify, DON’T DO IT!! The State of New Jersey is suppose to come into compliance with the Federal Real ID Act by October 1, 2020.
Have a look at the Federal Requirements that are required to obtain a Real ID: https://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/real-id-act-text.pdf Changing your gender on your State License now will keep you from qualifying for the Federal Real ID. Or at least open up an administrative nightmare to navigate to obtain the Real ID.
NJ Officials are well aware of this deadline. It is beyond my comprehension why this obstacle is being introduced without making the Real ID compliance known.
What ever your thoughts or preferences are for identifying, it isn’t worth running the risk of being turned away at the airport if an emergency arises and you have to fly!
