Caribbean Taste at the 2017 International Food and Wine Festival

Disney World’s 2017 International Food and Wine Festival is set for it’s longest run, August 31 through November 13. It is a fantastic culinary experience with celebrity chefs, premium events, Eat to the Beat concerts, and more.

One of the popular culinary presentations that has been a presence at the Food and Wine Festival for years is the Islands of the Caribbean Booth. Some of their dishes they have featured include: Mojo Pork with Black Beans, Cilantro Rice and Pickled Red Onions, Jamaican Beef Patty, Pescado don Coco – Seared Grouper, Pigeon Peas, and Rice with Coconut Sauce, Quesito — Puff Pastry with Sweetened Cream Cheese and Guava Sauce, Frozen Mojitos, and Caribbean Sangria.

CaribbeanDays can reserve your resort stay now at one of Disney’s EPCOT located resorts that are within 5 minute walking distance to these activities: Yacht Club Resort, Beach Club Resort, or Boardwalk Inn.

The Cayman Cabana Oceanside RestoBar in the Cayman’s offers a Farm To Table experience with locally grown produce, meats and seafood. All produced by the local farmers and fishermen. Don’t forget to try the homemade mango salsa and rum barbecue sauce!

In Montserrat, we recommend the full local experience and sign up for the island’s lively rum shop tours. Comfortable vans travel around the island’s many small local eateries, rum shops and other watering holes. Guests than enjoy all the tastes of local food and play darts and dominoes alongside the island’s local residence, many of whom extend the party outdoors on Friday nights. Montserrat bars have no official closing time.

Stay at a savanna view room at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and maybe you will catch a glimpse of Shenzi! Disney’s cast member, Whoopi Goldberg was the voice of Shenzi in Lion King.
In the meantime, here is James Cameron lending a preview of Pandora, the Land of Avatar to Whoopi Goldberg.

Notice how James Cameron describes how the plant life was made for Pandora. The bioluminescent plants were created by sculptors and mixed in with real plant life.

Pirate François “Peg Leg” Le Clerc and the Cursed Spanish Treasure

Pirate François “Peg Leg” Le Clerc and the Cursed Spanish Treasure

It is no wonder that Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean is such a successful franchise. The stories depicted are actually based on historic accountings as well as existing legends.

In the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Captain Barbossa and his crew were cursed by spanish gold treasure. This does have historic accounting.

In 1563, Francois “Peg Leg” Le Clerc did attack the Spanish galleon San Cristobal that was commanded under the personal guard of King Phillip II of Spain. Le Clerc and the treasure took refuge in Sainte-Marie, Martinique. Neither the treasure nor Le Clerc were ever seen again. The treasure is said to be cursed by Le Clerc himself.

“Whoever disturbs the treasure that bears his blood will then join him…in hell”.

This was the curse that was depicted in “The Curse of the Black Pearl”.

How much is legend? What will the seas reveal to you

Davy Jone’s Locker

Ever hear of Davy Jones Locker?  You may be familiar with the term from the Disney franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean.  But what is it really?  Davy Jones’ Locker is a dimension to which souls are claimed by the sea, or devoured by the Kraken, were sent – according to myth. It is like the Catholic concept of purgatory. Davy Jones Locker is where souls must remain until their final judgment.  It is a pirate’s and sailor’s idea of Hell.

The story of Davy Jone’s Locker started from a proprietor of a pub in Great Britain in the 1500s.  The proprietor’s name was Davy Jones. The proprietor would shut inebriated seafarers into his beer locker when they could not pay their bar tab.  Those indebted sailors would be sold as laborers onto pirate vessels.  These indebted men, when they died at sea, were said to have gone to “Davy Jone’s Locker”.
